Hello, my name is Natalie Vizzina! I am an artist based in Birmingham, Alabama. I recently graduated from the University of Alabama in May of 2022 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama, with a primary concentration in Digital Media, and a secondary concentration in Sculpture.
The process of growing and maturing through times of change is an experience that everyone will go through in life. My work as an artist examines the feelings I myself experience in these times of change, and hopefully allows those viewing my work to relate to similar emotions. In moments of growth and maturing, one rarely seems to make all the right decisions; sometimes we move backwards instead of forwards. My work conveys this ebb and flow through uses of movement in my pieces, as well as contrasting elements of chaos and calmness.
A common element of my work consists of layering, emphasizing the idea that life is a constant string of experiences that eventually take the formation of who we are as a person. Similarly, the layering of elements in my work eventually form a larger, unique piece. I work in both the digital space, as well as physically through sculpture. I feel a sense of freedom when I can design something digitally, and then have the ability to make that piece with my hands, and know every detailed element that went into its creation. With each piece I create, they contain their own sense of growth and change as the piece evolves. The finished pieces are hardly ever what I originally had in my mind to create. This process in itself allows me to stay connected to the themes of growth and change; that the future is unpredictable, but the through process is where we find ourselves.
