Senior Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition

Fluidity of Change

As part of the graduating requirement for my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama, I was tasked with putting together my own show at the end of my final semester. With six pieces total, my show Fluidity of Change consisted of three pieces made by hand using acrylic plastic, and three digitally projected pieces created in Blender.

In moments of growth and maturing, one tends to find that the person they are on the other side differs from the person they were before. Fluidity of Change is the result of reflecting on the changes in my life that have led me to where I currently am, as well as where my future will take me. In creating these pieces, the fluidity, movements, and purifying nature of water stayed on my mind. No shape of water is the same; leaving the surface changed with each wave. In the creation of these pieces, I related them each to a “wave” or movement of water; some fast, some slow, some chaos and some calmness. These waves of change reflect specific moments in my life where I have felt my life shifting, specifically in the last four years of college. With each piece there is an implication of future movement; that those changes and waves will continue, as change is a universal truth that persists in every person’s life, whether it is welcomed or not.

I included both digital 3D designed pieces as well as physical sculptures, allowing them to have a relationship with one another through the use of projection, creating elements of light and shadows.

With the physical movements of water, there is also a spiritual, purifying nature that drew me into the concept even further. It acts as a restorer of life, as in a baptismal way. It washes away the past, yet leaves the surface changed. We are washed clean with every big change in our life, and we are left with the lessons learned along the way. We are never the same as where we started.
